On 1 April 1972, in the premises next to the Torre della Vittoria, in Piazza della Cattedrale overlooking Piazza del Municipio, Leon d’Oro opened its doors. Mr Valter Paganelli, already a master pastry chef at another historic establishment, the “Bida” pastry shop, together with his wife Maria Pia Magagna (known to everyone as Elsa), his still-teenage children and his colleague Franco Fergnani, inaugurated the new bar, pastry shop and caf\u00e9 with its own in-house workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A multi-purpose venue for its time, it fit into an evolving city context, increasingly frequented by tourists and workers, in a square that, at the time, was still congested with car traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The well-deserved success of this business allowed the floor space to be doubled in 1999, incorporating the entire ground floor of the Palazzo Municipale, thus completing the food offering with a restaurant service, also thanks to the large outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2012, and again in 2018, further expansions were carried out overlooking Via Cortevecchia, with kitchens and dining rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Paganelli family’s management continued until 2025, the year in which the venue became part of the Pavani group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The culinary recipes and the spirit of the venue have been admirably passed on to the new management, which carries forward the traditions and specialities of this historic Ferrara institution with a contemporary touch, continuing to bake the specialities of Ferrara pastry-making such as pampepato, brazadele (typical Ferrara ring-shaped cake), zuppa inglese, tenerina cakes, riccioline, not to mention the famous pasticci di maccheroni that have made this shop’s history.
