La Cantinetta
La Cantinetta is a historic sandwich shop located on Corso Porta Po, next to the square of the Church of San Benedetto, designed by the famous architect Biagio Rossetti and built between 1496 and 1533 on commission of the Benedictine monks who, because of malaria, had abandoned Pomposa for the inland countryside. The site on which this establishment stands was, at the time, part of the Benedictine abbey complex itself.
Founded in 1972, the business was the city’s first snack bar, promoting an idea of an alternative venue for those years, far from the usual bars where people used to play cards or billiards — a modern, young and cutting-edge bar.
A historic venue known to all Ferrara residents for its unique atmosphere, with its wooden tables left intact over the years, it is also known for its specialities: the famous “PANO”, a sandwich made with Tuscan bread from Altopascio, the open sandwiches with their artisanal sauces, and the typical dishes of the area.
Sandwich shop, pizzeria, snack bar, bruschetteria, tapas bar, beer house and wine bar… there are many facets and offerings of this Ferrara establishment, which remains unique both from a gastronomic and a historical-cultural point of view.
